World-of-Warcraft-maker Blizzard has released its first original gaming franchise in nearly two decades.

Overwatch - a first-person shooter - also marks the first time the studio has launched a title worldwide on PC and consoles simultaneously.

WoW is the second bestselling PC game of all time, but its subscriber numbers have halved since their peak in 2010.

Blizzard predicts strong sales of Overwatch and hopes it will attract large audiences as an e-sport.

The game is a departure from the developer's previous hits, in which players usually viewed the world from a god-like, third-person perspective.

Instead, players look directly down the barrel of their weapon as they roam a colourful world battling other gamers.

Overwatch seeks e-sports domination

"Blizzard has a huge following on a global basis and is one of the best renowned publishers," said Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games at the IHS Technology consultancy.

The game is also Blizzard's first new "intellectual property" in 18 years, since the studio has focused on spin-offs and expansions for existing franchises such as WoW, Diablo and Starcraft.

"But it has no pedigree in first-person shooters (FPS), so people will be excited to see what potential the game holds."

Subscribers to WoW have dropped from a high of 12 million in 2010 to 5.5 million in 2015, and the company has since stopped reporting the figures.

Overwatch seeks e-sports domination

"E-sports is not only a driver of audience expansion, but also importantly drives growth in terms of time spent with our franchises," he said during an earnings call on 5 May.

If it captures the attention of e-sports competitors, it could have a very profitable future.

"Professional gaming competitions were watched online by roughly 200 million people in the past year, whilst over $200m (£138m) has been awarded in e-sports tournaments to date," said Dr Mark Johnson, a games researcher at the University of York.

Thomas Tippl, chief operating officer at Activision Blizzard, said Overwatch would be "Blizzard's biggest launch since Diablo 3 in 2012" and hoped it would "resonate well in e-sports".

"In recent years, Counterstrike has been the only highly successful FPS game with substantial longevity for professional gaming, so a game like Overwatch certainly has the potential to grab a huge new slice of this market.

"However, many FPS games have unsuccessfully tried to carve out a long-term sustainable place in e-sports, so it remains to be seen whether or not Overwatch has the right formula to knock Counterstrike off the pedestal."

Overwatch has already piqued the interest of many gamers, with almost 10 million players taking part in an early road test of the game.

Officially the trial period was to "test servers" and iron out any problems, but the studio's chief financial officer Dennis Durkin has acknowledged: "We're doing a tonne to expose players to the richness of this world."

"We learned a lot from the open test," Michael Chu, senior game designer at Blizzard, told the BBC. "We value the input of the community and we have been changing things here and there, addressing player concerns."

One of those concerns was about the portrayal of female characters. Some players complained that an over-the-shoulder victory pose for Tracer drew particular attention to her buttocks, while others questioned magazines featuring female characters littering the floor of an in-game toilet.

"There was a victory pose that we felt like we could make better and more exemplified the character. So we changed that," said Mr Chu.

The magazines were removed too, and the company says it has worked hard to create a diverse cast of characters.

Overwatch seeks e-sports domination
"One thing we hope you'll notice in the game is that we have this big roster of heroes. We have some solider-like characters who have a military style, but we also have characters like Mercy, she's a guardian angel who moves around the battlefield healing.

"We wanted to get players working together as a team to achieve victory."

Despite speculation that Overwatch might be free to download, with revenue generated from in-game purchases, Blizzard said it had always intended to sell the game as an upfront purchase.

"It was always going to be a boxed product," said Mr Chu. "We feel like that is a really good way to go because so much of the gameplay comes from switching between heroes during combat, so having all the characters available rather than locked away was really important."

Unlike World of Warcraft, there will be no subscription fee to play Overwatch online. However, there will be in-game purchases in the form of Loot Boxes that can be used to customise characters.

Blizzard says that these can also be earned for free and it has promised "new maps and characters" will be added to the game at no cost.

Fans who have been waiting two years since the announcement that there would be a live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast finally were treated to a glimpse today when Disney released a teaser trailer. Though it really is more teaser than trailer, the original animated Beauty and the Beast is beloved enough to stir up a lot of excitement and nostalgia over this.

Fans who have been waiting two years since the announcement that there would be a li

Here are some things about the original you may not know:

Production Was A Beast

The production went through many delays, changes, and re-workings. Walt Disney had attempted to adapt the Beauty and the Beast story in the 1930’s and the 1950’s, but could not find a treatment that worked. After the success of The Little Mermaid in 1989, the Disney team decided to try it again, and an initial storyboard reel was drawn up. It was not a musical and Disney felt it was too dark, so it was ordered to be scrapped and started over. The director resigned soon after. The 2017 live-adaptation has had some restructuring as well, as Stephen Chbosky was brought in to re-write the script after Evan Spiliotopoulos’s first run at it. It seems that the live-action adaptation is taking as much care as the original to make sure it’s done right.

Beauty and the Beast was the first animated Disney film to begin as a screenplay, instead of the traditional method of developing through storyboarding. The screenwriter, Linda Woolverton, was also the first women to write a Disney animated film and had a vested interest in creating a princess for the next generation to look up to. The princesses prior to Belle were predominantly confined to domestic spheres, solely oriented around romance, often sleeping or silent through the majority of their story, and limited in character traits to beauty and gentleness. One of Woolverton's inspirations for Belle's characterizations was Katherine Hepburn as Jo in Little Women.

A Slovakian model accused of murdering her British millionaire ex-boyfriend at his luxury home in Spain has described in court the moment he died after a violent struggle.

News Courts

A tearful Mayka Kukucova, appearing in front of a jury at the Ciudad de la Justicia in Malaga, insisted she "never wanted to hurt" Andrew Bush.

Kukucova, 26, said that she had gone to Mr Bush's home to collect her things when he returned unexpectedly from a trip with his new girlfriend.

"I was watching television, then I heard Andy in the garden. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I went upstairs to get dressed.

"When he came and saw me he told his girlfriend (Maria Korotaeva) to go out to the car.

"He started shouting and hitting me and took me strongly by the arms. I said I wanted to go but he said no.

Mayka Marica Kukucova wipes her face as she appears in court in Malaga, Spain: Steve Parsons/PA Wire

"He was shouting that he was going to kill me and my family."

After a struggle down the stairs, Kukucova said: "Then the gun was in my hands. I threw myself on him and we were fighting and then the gun went off.

"I couldn't hear anything. I was just trying to get away. I didn't want to hurt him."

She said she had tried to go back upstairs but there was a struggle on the staircase as Mr Bush came after her.

She said of the struggle: "I don't know how many times the gun went off."

The court heard that Kukucova then left the house and told Ms Korotaeva to get out of Mr Bush's car before driving off.

Her defence counsel Carlos Larranaga said: "The facts are that a person has died. There was a homicide but we have not accepted that my client is a murderer.

"My client shot him."

He told the jury: "You must decide if Mr Bush was killed in an aggressive way, or as a method of defence."

The pair met when Kukucova worked at a jewellery store owned by Mr Bush in Bristol.
Kukucova said they were together for two-and-a-half years before the relationship broke down.

Her account of the events leading up to Mr Bush's death in April 2014 came after the prosecution told the court he died after being shot three times, once in the shoulder and twice in the head.

Kukucova has not entered a plea in relation to killing Mr Bush, 48.

The court heard that she was arrested after handing herself in four days after the shooting in her home town of Nova Bosaca in Slovakia.

She was detained on suspicion of "consumed intentional homicide" before being extradited to Spain to face charges of murder and vehicle theft.

Ms Korotaeva, a Russian national, met Mr Bush while studying as an undergraduate at the University of the West of England.

Following his death, she posted a picture of the couple on Instagram with the message: "I will always love you. You will always be in my heart. The man who changed my world for better. My teacher. I wish I could of saved you. RIP Andy Bush."

The trial is due to last until the end of the week and Mr Bush's sister, Rachel, is expected to give evidence.

At I/O this year, Google displayed its vision for a more ubiquitous and conversational way of interacting with technology. Its Assistant is chattier, answering natural language queries with a more human voice, and it’s found its way into several new Google products: the messenger Allo and the Echo-like speaker Home. Both are areas where other companies have a lead, but Google’s strength in AI gave these services some nice twists, doing things like automatically generating surprisingly specific reactions to photos.

Google also announced improvements to Android — though N, out of beta this summer, still needs to be named — as well as a mobile VR platform that will come with the new OS. There’s a FaceTime rival Duo as well, and a way to run Android apps without downloading anything. Below are the 10 biggest announcements.

Google has a new VR platform

The biggest Google I/O 2016 news in 10 minutes

Daydream is Google’s VR platform of the future

Google now has a mobile virtual reality platform. It's called Daydream, and it's built on top of Android N. That means it's not going to compete with the likes of the PC-powered HTC Vive or Oculus Rift (at least not yet, anyway), but looks much more powerful than Cardboard and represents a huge step in the push to advance VR out of its early stages.

From the sound of it, Daydream is a lot like Android for VR. It's a backbone of software inside Android N (simply known as "VR Mode") that provides users with an entire ecosystem to play around in. There will be a home screen with apps (which looks a lot like the Gear VR's home screen, to be honest), and Google has apparently already created special VR versions of its own apps like YouTube, Street View, the Google Play Store, Play Movies, and Google Photos. Other companies, like The New York Times, HBO, Netflix, Ubisoft, and Electronic Arts are already developing for Daydream as well.

The biggest limitation for Daydream seems to be that it will only work on new phones that have special sensors and screens. Google says that those Daydream-ready phones will be available this fall, and that we can expect to see them from Samsung, HTC, LG, Huawei, and more. The company is also releasing reference designs for headsets as a way of encouraging phonemakers to get on board with the platform.

Google made a VR headset… sort of

One of the rumors leading up to this year's I/O conference was that Google would announce its very own mid-tier VR headset — something more capable and polished than Cardboard, but more affordable and accessible than the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift.

This wound up being only sort of true. Google showed off a reference design for a smartphone-powered VR headset that looks a lot like a smaller, cordless Oculus Rift. (The company also showed a motion controller with a touchpad.) What's interesting here is that Google is approaching VR much like it originally approached Android, because the company also announced the Daydream initiative, a mobile VR platform that will be baked into Android N. Like with Android, Google is providing companies with a backbone of software while pointing them in a particular direction on the hardware side.

Of course, Google actually makes its phone reference designs in the form of Nexus devices, so it's anyone's guess whether we'll see a real Google VR headset as Daydream evolves, or if we'll just keep getting more blueprints.

Google has two new messaging apps

Allo is a messaging app with a resident chatbot

Google is making a new AI-powered foray into messaging with Allo. It’s a mobile-only app that you sign up for with your phone number and have the option of connecting to your Google account. It has the usual messaging features, including emoji, some custom stickers, and the ability to draw on photos. It also has the ability to control the font size of your messages.

One of Allo’s distinguishing features is the Google Assistant. There’s more on that below, but users will be able to call on the Assistant for information and automatically generated replies.

Google also stressed the privacy aspects to Allo. All messages in Allo are encrypted, but Allo also has an incognito mode, encrypting messages end-to-end. It also has private notifications and expiring messages.

Duo is Google’s FaceTime competitor

Because one messaging app is never enough, Google followed up its announcement of Allo with another app called Duo. It’s a video chatting app that, much like how Apple splits up iMessage and FaceTime, exists separately and is completely dedicated to a video-only experience.

The good thing about that is Duo will be dead simple to use. When you open the app you’re presented with a selfie-cam video preview of yourself — which is important, because when you pick who you want to call, a feature called "Knock Knock" allows the person you’re calling to see a video preview of you before they even answer.

Duo is mobile-only, though, and it’s tied to your phone number, so FaceTime has a big advantage here. But Duo — like Allo — will be available on both Android and iOS this summer.

More assistants in more places

A smart speaker for the smart home

The company also announced a new home assistant called Google Home, a small speaker with always-listening microphones that integrates into a broad range of services. The obvious comparison is Amazon’s Echo, and Home will answer questions and execute commands in a similar way, relying on Google’s Assistant technology to make sense of the queries.

The device itself is a small cylinder with a rounded top and a speaker at the base, available in a number of different shells to match your decor. Unlike Echo, it’s designed to be used with multiple devices in multiple rooms, so you can ask a single query and not have to worry about three different devices answering back.

Home is built on the Chromecast standard, which lets it push media to other Cast-compatible speakers and screens, change temperature or lighting through Nest devices, and integrate with services like Spotify. Google hasn’t opened Home’s API to developers yet, so Home can’t communicate with as many outside services as Echo, but Google says those integrations will become possible as the platform develops.

It’s with great pleasure that Google celebrates Yuri Kochiyama, an Asian American activist who dedicated her life to the fight for human rights and against racism and injustice. Born in California, Kochiyama spent her early twenties in a Japanese American internment camp in Arkansas during WWII. She and her family would later move to Harlem, where she became deeply involved in African American, Latino, and Asian American liberation and empowerment movements. Today's doodle by Alyssa Winans features Kochiyama taking a stand at one of her many protests and rallies.

Kochiyama left a legacy of advocacy: for peace, U.S. political prisoners, nuclear disarmament, and reparations for Japanese Americans interned during the war. She was known for her tireless intensity and compassion, and remained committed to speaking out, consciousness-raising, and taking action until her death in 2014.

Shadow Commons Leader Chris Bryant added: “I am sure the thoughts of the whole House will be with the families and friends of those on EgyptAir Flight 804, which has disappeared over the Mediterranean.

The world's largest cruise ship, Harmony of the Seas, has arrived in the UK.

The £783m vessel, which came into
Southampton earlier, is 361m (1,187ft) long and can carry 6,780 passengers.

The world's largest cruise ship Harmony of the Seas has set off on its first sea trial from France.

The ship comes with an impressive list of statistics, at 362m ( long and 120,000-tonnes, the €1bn (£783m; $1.1bn) vessel beats all previous-held records.

Thousands of people gathered to watch in the port of Saint-Nazaire when the 70m (230ft) high vessel was guided out to sea by six tugs on Thursday.

It features 20 restaurants, 23 swimming pools and took more than two-and-a-half years to construct.

The 70m (230ft) high cruise ship had its first trial in March when it was guided out to sea from the port of Saint-Nazaire.

It will leave Southampton for a four-night cruise to Rotterdam on 22 May.

On 26 May it will leave the city again for a three-night cruise to Cherbourg before finally leaving Southampton for its summer base of Barcelona on 29 May.

sinead o connor missing - Police in a Chicago suburb called off their search Monday for singer-songwriter Sinead O'Connor after she was found safe.
Officer Fred King of the Wilmette, Illinois, Police Department told CNN that O'Connor was located Monday after being missing for more than a day. An unnamed caller had alerted authorities that the singer had not returned from a bike ride early Sunday morning.
Police didn't offer any details about where O'Connor had been or how they located her.

"The Wilmette Police is seeking to check the well-being of Sinead O'Connor," said an earlier press release from the desk of Wilmette Police Sgt. Michael Robinson. "O'Connor reportedly left the Wilmette area for a bicycle ride yesterday at 6:00 AM and has not returned. A caller has expressed concern for her well-being and no other information is available at this time."

The Irish-born singer, who became a global star in 1990 with her Prince-penned hit, "Nothing Compares 2 U," has had her fair share of troubles in recent years.

Earlier this month former late-night host Arsenio Hall filed suit against her for $5 million, claiming defamation after she accused him of supplying Prince with drugs "over the decades" and of drugging her.

Many of the flavoured yoghurts available in supermarkets contain more sugar than chocolate biscuits and other junk food favourites, a new study has pinpointed.

Consumers might think that they are making a healthy choice when reaching for a yoghurt, but many contain more sugar than three chocolate digestives as they are loaded with syrups, fruit and crunchy add-ins including granola.
The British study, published by the Food Foundation, found that Muller Corner yoghurts are one of the top offenders on the market, often containing between 21g and 30g of sugar per yoghurt. The strawberry shortcake flavour Muller Yoghurt contained 17g of added sugar, which is 90pc of the recommended daily intake for children.

The report suggested that large amounts of sugar were included in the products to keep costs down.
“Moreover sugar plays a key role in defining the bulk (volume) and texture of food, as well as being able to bind water, which is important in food preservation.” In other words, sugar is a cheap way to bulk yoghurt out, to make it creamier and extend its shelf life,” the report suggests.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Nutritionist Dr Sarah Schenker revealed that there should be naturally occurring sugars in yoghurt, but anything more than 5g has been added.
“If all you can taste is sweetness, and the flavour of the fruit or yogurt doesn’t come through, it contains too much sugar,” she says.

“Those corners are the worst offenders, especially the ones with crispy bits or chocolate balls. They really do undermine the healthiness of yogurt. If you want to have a bit of chocolate or fudge, have a scoop of ice cream.”
The report suggested that consumers are often misled by ‘low-fat’ labels, which can in fact be extremely high when it comes to added sugar.

The nutritionist suggested that the dairy lovers should make the switch to natural Greek yoghurt, and add fruit and small amounts of honey should they need a sweetness hit.
“Because of the way it’s strained, Greek yogurt contains less natural sugar and more protein than regular yoghurt,” she says. “And it will keep you fuller for longer.”

One of the Middle East's most charismatic and mysterious guerrilla leaders has been killed in a explosion of unknown origin on an air base in Syria, the militant group Hizbollah has confirmed.

Mustafa Badreddine (55), who was directing the group's operations in support of the Assad regime, was the highest ranking leader of the group to have died since his cousin and brother-in-law, its military commander, was assassinated in Damascus by Mossad in 2008.
Initial claims that Israel had killed Badreddine too were withdrawn, and the Hezbollah statement, which did not give a date or time of his death, said it was investigating whether it was the result of an air raid, missile attack or artillery shelling.

Hezbollah, which has fought several wars against Israel, has been fighting alongside Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.
Whoever killed him - and his enemies included Gulf states and rebel groups in Syria as well as Israel - brought to an end the career of a man once seen as a ghostly presence in Hezbollah's command, who was reported to have no passport, driving licence or property in Lebanon, yet who had a string of mistresses and drove around the Christian seaside resort of Jounieh in a large Mercedes.

He is thought to have joined his first militant group in the 1970s as a teenager, before going on to help found Hizbollah, a militant, Iranian-backed Shia Islamist group that emerged from the Lebanese civil war.

He may have honed his skills as a bomb-maker in the attacks on the US and French military barracks in Beirut in 1983, which killed 305 people.

That was masterminded by Imad Mugniyeh, his cousin and brother-in-law, Hizbollah's military chief and his mentor in the organisation, with whom he has said to have watched the explosions from a nearby rooftop.
A year later, Badreddine personally supervised the bombing of the US embassy in Kuwait, which killed six people. He was caught, jailed and sentenced to death. Luckily for him, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 and he was freed, escaping to the Iranian embassy which arranged his evacuation to Tehran and then back to Beirut.

He went on to direct operations against Israel in the south of Lebanon, culminating in the war of 2006, seen by many as Hizbollah's biggest victory over its great enemy.
At the time of his death he was standing trial in absentia at the Hague for organising the killing of Rafik Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister and dominant Sunni politician.

George Clooney has vowed that Donald Trump will not be elected president, promising that "fear is not going to be something that drives" the United States.

Clooney spoke to reporters at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday, where he stars in Jodie Foster's hostage thriller 'Money Monster'. Clooney, a prominent fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, insisted Trump will not win.

"There's not going to be a President Donald Trump," Clooney said. "That's not going to happen. Fear is not going to be something that drives our country. world-news We're not going to be scared of Muslims or immigrants or women. We're not actually afraid of anything."

Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, last month hosted a pair of events in Los Angeles and San Francisco that raised millions for Clinton.
The actor said Trump was the product of the collision of news and entertainment depicted in 'Money Monster'. In it, Clooney plays a Jim Cramer-like financial guru taken hostage live on the air by a distraught investor (Jack O'Connell). Julia Roberts co-stars as the programme's producer.

"Trump is actually a result in many ways of the fact that much of the news programmes didn't follow up and ask tough questions," said Clooney.
"Twenty-four-hour news doesn't mean you get more news, it means you get the same news more," he continued. "More and more and more you hear these guys, their ratings go up because they can show an empty podium saying 'Donald Trump is about to speak,' as opposed to taking those 30 seconds and saying, 'Well, let's talk about refugees,' which is the biggest crisis going on in the world right now."

For the 55-year-old Clooney, television news has been a lifelong theme. His father, Nick Clooney, was a journalist and distinguished local news anchor. Clooney's second film as a director was 2005's 'Good Night, and Good Luck', his black-and-white Edward R Murrow drama about the halcyon days of television news.
Foster's fourth film debuted in Cannes yesterday ahead of its North American release today. Critics greeted it with lukewarm reviews, though the film has drawn praise for being a rare commodity: an adult thriller with some meaning.

"This movie is talking about one of the things that I think is a great disaster in the way we inform ourselves right now," said Clooney. "We've lost the ability to get to and tell the truth and get to the facts."
Meanwhile, Mr Trump has softened his stance on the most controversial proposal of the 2016 election campaign, saying his call to ban Muslims from entering the US was "just a suggestion".

Speaking to Fox News, he said: "It hasn't been called for yet. Nobody's done it. This is just a suggestion until we find out what's going on." The ban was only supposed to be temporary, he said in a separate television interview with Fox News. "We have to be vigilant. There is a radical Islamic terrorism problem that our president doesn't even want to talk about."
He pointed to examples of terrorism in Paris, San Bernardino in California, the 9/11 attacks, and "the other night in Germany", referring to a German citizen who ran amok near Munich, stabbing four people. But authorities have said the man had no terrorist links.

MILLIONS of people classed as being overweight have a lower risk of death than those who are deemed to be healthy, a new study suggests.

The definition of "overweight" may need to change after research showed that the healthiest size has increased by 3.3 Body Mass Index (BMI) points since the 1970s.
People who have a BMI of 27 - officially classed as overweight - now have the lowest risk of dying from any condition.
Crucially, the average BMI for a man in the British Isles is 27 and for a woman is 26.9, meaning large numbers of people who are currently classed as overweight, actually have the optimal BMI and the lowest chance of death.
In contrast, those deemed healthy could be at greater risk than they thinkNews Health.
"The study is important because, compared with the 1970s, today's overweight individuals have lower mortality than so-called normal weight individuals," said Dr Borge Nordestgaard, chief physician in clinical biochemistry at Copenhagen University Hospital.
"Therefore, these results would indicate a need to revise the categories used to define overweight, which are based on data from before the 1990s. Maybe moderately overweight people need not be quite as worried about their weight as before."
Body Mass Index is based on a person's weight and height. Under the classification system, a BMI below 18.5 is regarded as underweight; anything between 18.5 and 24.9 is "healthy"; 25 or over is "overweight"; and 30 or more is categorised as "obese".
But critics say the system can overestimate the danger posed to people with heavy bone structures, or large muscle mass, while missing "apple-shaped" people who carry dangerous levels of fat around their middle.
Muscle weighs more than fat, so BMI will inevitably class muscled, athletic people as fatter than they really are.
A 6ft Olympic 100m sprinter weighing 200lbs may have the same BMI (26) as a couch potato of the same height and weight.
Last year a study by Oxford Brookes University found that simply measuring height with string, folding it in half and checking if it can fit comfortably round the waist is a better way of finding if someone has too much body fat.
The new research looked at how death rates had changed among more than 120,000 people of differing weights who were involved in studies in the 1970s, 1990s, and the 2000s. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
