'I was waiting for Ryan Seacrest to say 'Hey man - what are you wearing?' but he never showed up' - Nicky Byrne on the Eurovision Opening Ceremony

Nicky Byrne has compared Sunday night's Eurovision Opening Ceremony to the Oscars.

Speaking at the red carpet event in Stockholm on Sunday night, the Irish singer was in high spirits.

"It was incredible," he said of the event.

"I watch E Online and watch the Oscars  - you know and you think wouldn't it be great to be there but yesterday the sun was shining - I was waiting for Ryan Seacrest to say "Hey man - what are you wearing!" but he never showed up," he joked.

"After that we went to the City Hall and it was a great reception where the Mayor did a fantastic speech and all the previous Swedish winners performed - except Abba of course - but Bjorn came down and did a great speech.

"One thing he said last night which resonated with everyone - there's not a lot of things in Europe anymore where you can be yourself and enjoy it and it allows, on a global television

scale, for Europe to come together.

"There aren't many things like that anymore on that scale - in fact I don't think there's anything else so it is that couple of weeks of being yourself, coming over, flying your flag, there's friendly rivalry from every nation and it's about - life is short, go and enjoy yourself."

The former Westlife star talked about how how he hoped to make his performance stand out on Saturday night.

"You've got three minutes to be memorable. A lot of countries will do different things. Some people are jumping from trampolines, I know the Belarussian guy was saying he was going to be naked with wolves.

"I think for Ireland - we try to be non gimmicky, more about it's the song, it's the performance and I think me with promoting my solo album - there will be a second single from this and a third single - to me it was more of a One Republic, Maroon 5, Coldplay style look.
