In the first rescue, 274 migrants were found in an 18m-long wooden vessel around 39 miles north-west of Tripoli.

Once they were brought aboard, the crew of the LÉ Róisín was immediately asked to assist in another rescue - this time involving 121 migrants who were in a 12m-long rubber craft around 10 miles closer to the Libyan coast.

The operation started at around 12.30pm yesterday and by 3pm, a total of 395 migrants were on board the Irish naval vessel, receiving water and food. Medical treatment was also provided for those who needed it.

The LÉ Róisín was last night travelling to the port of Catania, Sicily, where the migrants will be transferred to the Italian authorities. The vessel was deployed to the Mediterranean this month.
